The inputs are intentionally editable. A family that wants generous leftovers can choose a larger percentage, while a menu with many sides can choose fewer side servings per guest. The answer is only as good as the assumptions written beside it.
The base turkey estimate is guests multiplied by the pounds-per-guest assumption. With ten guests and 1.25 pounds per guest, the base is 12.5 pounds. The leftover factor then scales that amount by 1 plus the percentage divided by 100.
At 15% extra, the planned weight is 12.5 × 1.15 = 14.375 pounds, displayed as 14.38 pounds. This is a purchase estimate, not a forecast of edible meat after bones, trimming, and cooking loss.
The kilogram output uses the exact international conversion 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. The example's 14.375 pounds becomes about 6.52 kilograms.
The conversion changes the unit, not the food quantity. When shopping in a country that sells poultry by kilograms, round according to the available bird sizes and the host's menu plan rather than treating the display precision as a required package size.
Side servings are guests multiplied by side servings per guest, with the same leftover factor applied. Ten guests × two servings × 1.15 produces 23 planned servings.
If one prepared dish supplies eight servings, the calculator rounds 23 ÷ 8 up to three whole dishes. Rounding upward is deliberate: a partial dish cannot be purchased as a complete menu item, and a host can reduce the plan after considering other sides.
There is no single worldwide rule for how much turkey every person should receive. Appetite, age, bones, menu variety, leftovers, and local packaging all matter. This page exposes the portion number so the visitor can explain and adjust it.
