A current course average is not automatically the grade you will finish with because some assessments still carry weight. This planner turns that distinction into four useful answers: how many points are already contributing, how much weight remains, what average is required on that work, and what final grade is possible if the remaining work is perfect. The calculation is transparent so a student can compare it with the course gradebook rather than guess from a single displayed average.
If completed work represents 50% of a course and the current average on that work is 78%, it contributes 78 × 0.50 = 39 percentage points to the final course grade. The other 50% has not yet contributed. A gradebook may display 78% as the current average while the final course percentage is still 39 points plus whatever the remaining work earns.
This distinction matters when a student asks what is needed on a final exam, project, or remaining set of assignments. The page does not treat the current average as the final result unless 100% of the course weight is already completed.
Current contribution = current average × completed weight ÷ 100. Remaining weight = 100 − completed weight. Required remaining score = (target − current contribution) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100). With a target of 85, the example requires (85 − 39) ÷ 0.50 = 92% on the remaining work.
The result is a weighted-average consequence, not a prediction. If the remaining assessments have different weights, first use the gradebook's accurate completed and remaining totals. Do not replace a category-weighted course with a simple count of assignments.
Enter 78 for the completed average, 50 for completed weight, and 85 for the target. The current contribution is 39 points. The remaining weight is 50%. A 92% average on the remaining half adds 46 points, producing 39 + 46 = 85%.
The best possible final grade is 39 + 50 = 89% if the remaining work receives 100%. The zero-on-remaining scenario is 39%. These lower and upper bounds help show whether a target is already guaranteed, still reachable, or mathematically outside the stated scale.
A required score above 100% means the target cannot be reached under an ordinary 0–100 remaining-score scale unless extra credit or another policy changes the premises. A required score at or below 0% means the target is already reachable even with zero on remaining work. The page reports those interpretations rather than hiding them behind a capped number.
For example, a high current contribution can make a target easy, while a low completed average can make a high target impossible even when the remaining weight is large. The same formula explains both cases; only the inputs change.
Some courses weight categories, some weight points directly, some drop the lowest score, and some add extra credit. A gradebook may also exclude missing work, treat a zero as a scored item, or recalculate a category after a replacement. This page assumes the visitor has already converted the completed work into a reliable current average and a reliable completed-weight percentage.
If the gradebook gives points rather than category weights, use the points-based method provided by the course or convert the records carefully. The calculator should verify a stated policy, not invent one from a current display label.
Once the required score is known, break the remaining weight into its actual assessments. A 92% average across a final, project, and quiz can be reached through many combinations if the weights are known, but the calculator does not select a study plan or assume that every assessment is equally difficult. Use the result to identify the target and then discuss priorities with a teacher or tutor.
Run a conservative scenario as well as the target scenario. Comparing 80%, 90%, and 100% on the remaining work shows the final-grade range and can reduce the pressure to treat one rounded target as a guarantee.
The inputs must stay on the visible 0–100 percentage scale, and completed weight cannot exceed 100%. If completed weight is exactly 100%, the page reports the current average as the final grade and explains that no remaining score is defined. It does not divide by zero or pretend that an ungraded assessment still exists.
The handler rejects non-finite values and invalid boundaries instead of silently clamping them. The displayed steps preserve the weighted contribution, remaining weight, and required score so a teacher or student can reproduce the answer.
Does the current average mean the final grade? Only when all course weight is completed. What if the required score is 105%? The target is unreachable under the ordinary scale unless the course allows extra credit or another policy. Does this calculate GPA or letter grades? No; it returns a percentage and leaves the institution's conversion rules outside the model. Can it replace the gradebook? No; use the gradebook's weights and syllabus as the source of truth.

No extra credit, dropped score, grade replacement, curve, or attendance rule is modeled. A required remaining score above 100% is mathematically unreachable on the stated scale. A required score at or below 0% means the target is already reachable even with zero on remaining work. If all weight is completed, the current average is the final result and no remaining score exists. The calculator does not predict learning, effort, teacher decisions, or assessment difficulty. The course syllabus and gradebook remain the authority for a real class.
