What point buy is solving

Point buy replaces a random generation step with a bounded allocation problem. Every score begins at the lowest allowed value in the selected table, and raising a score consumes points. Early increases are inexpensive, while the highest values cost more. The result is a spread that can be balanced, specialized, or somewhere between those extremes while staying within a known budget.

The calculator separates three ideas that are often mixed together: the raw score, its cost, and its later modifier. A raw score of 14 costs seven points in this table, while its modifier is +2. Neither number is the same as a bonus added by a later rule. Keeping the layers separate prevents an otherwise tidy character sheet from hiding an arithmetic mistake.

The planner uses these costs: 8 costs 0, 9 costs 1, 10 costs 2, 11 costs 3, 12 costs 4, 13 costs 5, 14 costs 7, and 15 costs 9. The values are not a linear price per point. Moving from 13 to 14 costs two additional points, while moving from 14 to 15 costs two additional points as well, after the earlier costs have already been paid.

Because the table is piecewise, estimating the total by adding score values is wrong. A spread whose raw scores add to 72 can consume a different budget from another spread that also adds to 72. Always apply the cost to each score first, then add the costs. The result panel keeps the budget logic explicit.

Enter one whole number for Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. The fields are limited to eight through fifteen so an accidental later bonus is not mistaken for a starting point-buy score. If a rulebook uses a different range or a custom table, the page should be treated as an educational reference rather than a complete implementation of that variant.

The order of the six fields does not change the budget. It does change the character concept because the labels attach scores to abilities. Decide the intended role and table rules outside the arithmetic, then enter the resulting spread. The calculator does not rank the abilities or tell a player which one is most important.

Budget and remaining points

The page sums the six costs and subtracts that total from 27. A result of zero means the full budget is used. A positive result means points are unspent, which can be valid if the table permits it. A negative result means the entered spread exceeds the displayed budget and should be revised before it is used.

Do not hide an over-budget spread by truncating the remaining value at zero. The negative result is useful evidence that the plan does not fit. It also makes comparison easier: if two drafts are both valid, their remaining points show whether one could be raised under the same rules.

Modifiers are a separate layer

The ordinary modifier calculation is floor((score − 10) ÷ 2). Scores 8 and 9 therefore produce −1, scores 10 and 11 produce +0, scores 12 and 13 produce +1, and scores 14 and 15 produce +2. The floor operation matters for odd scores below ten; rounding toward zero would produce the wrong modifier for an eight or nine.

Later bonuses can change a final ability score and modifier in a specific game, but the point-buy worksheet stops before those changes. If a score of 15 receives a later +2, record the source of that adjustment on the character sheet. Do not enter 17 into this starting-score field because it would skip the point-buy contract.
