This page calculates the dimensional density and shows a dated density-based planning band while clearly separating that arithmetic from the official commodity and carrier decision.
Density compares shipment weight with the cubic space occupied by the handling units. A heavier shipment is not automatically a lower class if it also takes much more space; the weight-to-volume relationship is the first screen here.
For rectangular packages measured in inches, multiply length, width, height, and unit count, then divide by 1,728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet. Use the same package basis for weight and volume.
