Aspect ratio is the shape relationship between width and height. It becomes useful when an image, video, screen, or layout must be resized without stretching. This page keeps the ratio and target-scaling calculations separate from cropping and platform-specific rules.
Aspect ratio is width divided by height. A 1920×1080 source has a decimal ratio of 1.7777778 and the familiar simplified relationship 16:9.
When a target width is fixed, multiply that width by source height divided by source width. When a target height is fixed, multiply height by source width divided by source height. Only one edge needs to be chosen to preserve the shape.
For 1920×1080 scaled to 1,280 wide, preserved height is 1,280×1,080÷1,920 = 720. The result is still 16:9 and has not been cropped or stretched.
Whole-number dimensions can be reduced by their greatest common divisor. Dividing 1920 and 1080 by 120 produces 16 and 9; decimal or measured dimensions are better represented by the decimal ratio rather than an invented integer simplification.
Scaling to one target edge preserves the source shape. Fitting inside a box requires choosing the smaller of the width and height scale factors, while cropping can fill a box by removing content. Those are different operations.
If both target edges are fixed at a different ratio, the source cannot fill both without stretching, cropping, or padding. This calculator reports the preserved target dimension so the tradeoff remains visible.
The same ratio arithmetic works for pixels, inches, millimetres, or other consistent units. Pixel density, print resolution, device-pixel ratio, and display scaling affect appearance but do not change the geometric ratio.
Do not reverse height and width, mix units, or call a cropped output a preserved aspect-ratio resize. Record whether a target value is an exact edge or the maximum size of a containing box.
