What aspect ratio means

Aspect ratio is width divided by height. A 1920×1080 source has a decimal ratio of 1.7777778 and the familiar simplified relationship 16:9.

The scaling formula

When a target width is fixed, multiply that width by source height divided by source width. When a target height is fixed, multiply height by source width divided by source height. Only one edge needs to be chosen to preserve the shape.

Worked 16:9 example

For 1920×1080 scaled to 1,280 wide, preserved height is 1,280×1,080÷1,920 = 720. The result is still 16:9 and has not been cropped or stretched.

Simplified ratios

Whole-number dimensions can be reduced by their greatest common divisor. Dividing 1920 and 1080 by 120 produces 16 and 9; decimal or measured dimensions are better represented by the decimal ratio rather than an invented integer simplification.

Scaling versus fitting

Scaling to one target edge preserves the source shape. Fitting inside a box requires choosing the smaller of the width and height scale factors, while cropping can fill a box by removing content. Those are different operations.
