That total can make documentation easier to discuss, but it is still a summary of a clinical examination rather than a guarantee about labor or induction. This page keeps the traditional five-component table separate from simplified variants so the addition remains reproducible.
The traditional score includes cervical dilation, effacement, fetal head station, cervical consistency, and cervical position. Each finding contributes points according to a table.
Dilation, effacement, and station can contribute up to three points each. Consistency and position can contribute up to two each, producing a maximum of 13.
Simplified and modified Bishop scores use different fields or different weights. A shortened score may omit consistency and position, while a modified score may use cervical length instead of effacement.

Station describes the fetal head in relation to the ischial spines, with negative values above and positive values below the reference level. It should be recorded by the responsible professional using the local examination convention.
Cervical position and consistency are also examination judgments. They are not reliable fields for an untrained person to estimate from home, and the page is not an instruction for self-examination.
