The absolute eosinophil count estimates how many eosinophils are present in a volume of blood. It is different from the eosinophil percentage because the total white-cell count also changes.

With a WBC of 8 and eosinophils of 2.5%, the result is 0.2 ×10⁹/L, which equals 200 cells/µL.
A percentage can look high or low because the total white-cell count has changed. The absolute calculation combines both pieces of the CBC.
When the laboratory already reports an absolute count, use that report and check whether the differential and total count came from the same sample.
A count at or below about 500 cells/µL is commonly used as a reference boundary; 500–1500 is often called mild, 1500–5000 moderate, and above 5000 severe.
