Buying power sounds like one number, but the number on a trading screen depends on the account agreement, instrument, current positions, margin method, and the broker’s own risk controls. This page makes those assumptions editable so a visitor can understand the arithmetic before relying on a platform quote.
The result is an estimate of additional notional exposure supported by the entered equity and margin rates. It is a planning number, not an approval from a broker or a guarantee that an order will be accepted.
Equity is the account value used as the starting resource in the scenario. A broker may mark positions, cash, collateral, and unsettled activity differently, so the value should be taken from the account statement or platform when available.
An existing position is represented by its entered notional and the maintenance percentage applied to it. As that requirement grows, the remaining margin excess falls even if the account equity does not change.
