Formula and methodology
Formula: Bytes = vectors × (dims × bytesPer + metaKB × 1024).
Raw vector bytes plus per-item metadata give the working set before index overhead. ANN indexes (HNSW, IVF) add their own overhead on top.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Vector count — minimum 1; maximum 1000000000000
- Dimensions — minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Precision — 3 choices
- Metadata per vector — KB; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Vector count | 1000000 |
| Dimensions | 1536 |
| Precision | 4 |
| Metadata per vector | 1 |
7.17 GB total.
Assumptions and limits
- Flat storage; no compression, quantization indexes, or replication.
- Decimal GB (10^9 bytes) reported.
- Metadata is a flat per-vector average.
