Formula and methodology
Formula: Current contribution = current average × completed weight ÷ 100; remaining weight = 100 − completed weight; required remaining score = (target − current contribution) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100).
This planner separates the score already earned from the weight still available. It answers a target question under a simple weighted-grade contract; it does not infer a school's letter-grade scale, dropped assignments, extra credit, or instructor policy.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Average on completed work — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Weight already completed — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Target final grade — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Average on completed work | 78 |
| Weight already completed | 50 |
| Target final grade | 85 |
Completed work contributes 39 points; the remaining 50% needs an average of 92% to finish at 85%.
Assumptions and limits
- The current average represents only completed work and is already calculated on a 0–100 percentage scale.
- Completed and remaining weights together equal 100 percent.
- The remaining work is evaluated on the same percentage scale as the completed work.
- The target is a final percentage before any institution-specific letter-grade conversion.
- No extra credit, dropped score, grade replacement, curve, or attendance rule is modeled.
- A required remaining score above 100% is mathematically unreachable on the stated scale.
- A required score at or below 0% means the target is already reachable even with zero on remaining work.
- If all weight is completed, the current average is the final result and no remaining score exists.
- The calculator does not predict learning, effort, teacher decisions, or assessment difficulty.
- The course syllabus and gradebook remain the authority for a real class.
