Formula and methodology
Formula: Total volume (ft³) = length × width × height × handling units ÷ 1,728. Density (lb/ft³) = total weight ÷ total volume. The density-screening class uses the entered density against the current FCDC density-guideline table; it is not a final commodity classification.
The tool performs the dimensional-density calculation used as one input to LTL freight classification and returns a density-based planning class. NMFC classification also considers handling, stowability, liability, packaging, commodity provisions, and current tariff rules, so the result must not be represented as a carrier quote or final class.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Two 48×40×36 in units occupy 80 ft³; 1,000 lb gives a density of 12.5 lb/ft³, which falls in the 12–15 density band and returns a density-based planning class of 85.
Assumptions and limits
- All dimensions are outside package dimensions in inches and describe the same handling units.
- Total weight includes the shipment weight used for the density calculation.
- The units are rectangular for the volume screen; irregular voids and packaging rules are not inferred.
- One cubic foot is treated as 1,728 cubic inches.
- The density class is a screening result from the entered density, not an NMFC item lookup.
- The current FCDC density-guideline convention is recorded as a dated source-backed planning table.
- Handling, stowability, liability, packaging, greatest-dimension adjustments, and commodity-specific rules can change the final class.
- Mixed-size units should be modeled together only when their total volume and weight are intentionally aggregated.
- The result is for planning and data checking, not a bill-of-lading classification or freight charge.
- Carrier, country, tariff version, and effective date must be confirmed before booking.
