Formula and methodology
Formula: Cockcroft–Gault CrCl (mL/min) = [(140 − age) × weight (kg) × sex factor] ÷ [72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)], using 0.85 for the female factor in the traditional equation.
Cockcroft–Gault is an adult creatinine-clearance estimate that uses age, body weight, sex factor, and serum creatinine. The page shows the equation and its limitations so the number is not mislabeled as eGFR or treated as an automatic prescription instruction.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Sex factor used by the equation — 2 choices
- Age — years; minimum 18; maximum 120
- Body weight used — kg; minimum 20; maximum 300
- Serum creatinine — mg/dL; minimum 0.1; maximum 20
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Sex factor used by the equation | male |
| Age | 50 |
| Body weight used | 70 |
| Serum creatinine | 1 |
CrCl = ((140 − 50) × 70) ÷ (72 × 1) = 87.5 mL/min.
Assumptions and limits
- The equation is being used for an adult aged 18 years or older.
- Serum creatinine is stable and entered in mg/dL, not µmol/L.
- Weight is entered in kilograms and is the weight selected by the responsible local protocol.
- The traditional female factor is 0.85 and the male factor is 1.00.
- The result is an estimate of creatinine clearance and is not interchangeable with eGFR.
- Rapidly changing kidney function, pregnancy, unusual muscle mass, amputation, oedema, and extremes of body size can make a simple estimate unsuitable.
- Different medicines and guidelines may specify actual, ideal, or adjusted weight and a particular equation.
- Medication doses must be checked against the current local product information and a qualified prescriber or pharmacist.
