Formula and methodology
Formula: pH = pKa + log10([base]/[acid]).
Henderson–Hasselbalch adds the log of the base-to-acid ratio to pKa. Equal concentrations give pH equal to pKa.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- pKa — minimum -5; maximum 20
- Base concentration — mol/L; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 100
- Acid concentration — mol/L; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| pKa | 4.76 |
| Base concentration | 0.1 |
| Acid concentration | 0.1 |
pH 4.76.
Assumptions and limits
- Dilute ideal solution near the buffer region.
- Conjugate pair only; activity corrections ignored.
