Formula and methodology
Formula: Aspect ratio = source width ÷ source height. Height at target width = target width × source height ÷ source width. Width at target height = target height × source width ÷ source height. Diagonal = √(source width² + source height²).
The calculator preserves a source shape while scaling one target dimension. It reports the decimal ratio and a simplified integer ratio when the entered source dimensions are whole numbers; it does not crop, pad, or choose a display standard for the visitor.

- A target dimension is treated as an exact requested edge, not a maximum box.
- The diagonal uses the source dimensions and the same unit.
- The simplified ratio is shown only for whole-number source dimensions within safe integer precision.
- Pixel rounding, device-pixel ratio, codec limits, and platform upload rules are not inferred.
- A fixed target width and fixed target height can describe a different ratio; this page reports the preserved dimension rather than silently cropping.
- The unit can be pixels, millimetres, inches, or another consistent length unit.
