Formula and methodology
Formula: Age grade = reference standard time ÷ actual time × 100. Time gap = actual time − reference time; pace and speed are calculated from the entered distance.
Age grading is a comparison screen, not a new timing system. This page keeps the reference time explicit so a visitor can use the standard table and event category appropriate to their rules, then inspect the arithmetic behind the percentage.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Athlete age — years; minimum 18; maximum 110
- Actual race time — seconds; minimum 0.001; maximum 10000000
- Reference standard time — seconds; minimum 0.001; maximum 10000000
- Race distance — meters; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Athlete age | 40 |
| Actual race time | 1500 |
| Reference standard time | 1350 |
| Race distance | 5000 |
The entered performance is 90% age-graded, 150 seconds slower than the supplied reference, at 5:00 min/km.
Assumptions and limits
- The reference time matches the athlete's age, category, sex classification, event distance, timing method, and ruleset.
- Actual and reference times are positive and expressed in seconds.
- The race distance is measured in metres and is compatible with both times.
- A percentage above 100 means the actual time is faster than the supplied reference under this convention.
- The page does not embed or infer an official age-factor table.
- Pace is reported in minutes per kilometre and speed in metres per second.
- The comparison does not certify eligibility, ranking, record status, or athletic quality.
