Formula and methodology
Formula: Usable run = fence length − gate count × gate width; repeating picket pitch = picket width + gap; pickets = ceiling((usable run ÷ repeating pitch) × (1 + waste/100)); sections = ceiling(usable run ÷ post spacing); posts = sections + 1 + gate count; rail order length = usable run × rail count × (1 + waste/100).
Spaced wood fencing uses a repeating picket-and-gap pitch. This is intentionally separate from an overlapping privacy-board calculation because a gap increases horizontal coverage per picket rather than reducing it.

The 29 m usable run uses a 0.15 m picket pitch, producing 213 pickets, 15 posts, about 95.7 m of rails, and 36 m of planning post length.
Assumptions and limits
- Picket width and gap use the same length unit and the gap is positive for this spaced-fence model.
- Gate openings are removed from the continuous run and each gate adds one planning post.
- Pickets are assumed to be installed in one continuous face; a shadow-box or double-sided layout needs a separate board count.
- Post spacing, rail count, and the 0.6 m post-depth purchasing allowance are planning inputs or conventions, not code requirements.
- Waste is applied to pickets and rail length after the gate opening is removed.
