Formula and methodology
Formula: Dynamic pressure q=0.5×air density×wind speed²; estimated force=q×drag coefficient×exposed area×exposure factor.
This is a transparent drag-style scenario: first calculate the velocity pressure from the supplied air density and speed, then multiply by area, drag coefficient, and an explicitly entered factor. The factor lets a learner model a chosen scenario without hiding terrain, gust, shape, or code assumptions inside a default.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Air density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Wind speed — m/s; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Exposed area — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Drag coefficient — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Additional exposure factor — minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Air density | 1.225 |
| Wind speed | 20 |
| Exposed area | 10 |
| Drag coefficient | 1.2 |
| Additional exposure factor | 1 |
Dynamic pressure = 245 Pa; estimated drag force = 2,940 N.
Assumptions and limits
- Air density is in kilograms per cubic metre, wind speed in metres per second, and exposed area in square metres.
- The drag coefficient and exposure factor are supplied planning parameters and remain constant for the scenario.
- The wind is represented by one steady speed normal to the modeled projected area; gusts, turbulence, shielding, terrain, height variation, dynamic response, and load combinations are not modeled.
- The result is not a structural wind-code check, anchor design, cladding approval, or safe operating limit.
