Formula and methodology
Formula: Resolve the wind vector into course-aligned and cross-course components; WCA = asin(−crosswind/TAS), heading = course + WCA, groundspeed = TAS·cos(WCA)+along-wind component.
A wind correction angle is the signed heading offset needed for the aircraft's air vector and the wind vector to produce a ground track along the selected course. This implementation uses the full two-dimensional vector triangle rather than the small-angle crosswind approximation, then reports the sign convention explicitly.

A southerly wind on an eastbound course gives a small north/south correction; the returned signed angle, heading, and groundspeed use the stated direction convention.
Assumptions and limits
- Directions use degrees clockwise from true north; wind direction is the direction the wind comes from, while the vector is resolved toward where it travels.
- True airspeed and wind speed are steady horizontal speeds in knots, with no climb, descent, turn, or magnetic variation model.
- If the crosswind magnitude is at least the true airspeed, no straight-track heading solution exists in this model; this is planning arithmetic, not flight guidance.
