Formula and methodology
Formula: Wilks coefficient = 500 ÷ (a + bx + cx² + dx³ + ex⁴ + fx⁵), where x is body weight in kg and the coefficients depend on the selected historical category; Wilks score = total × coefficient.
Wilks was designed to compare totals across bodyweight categories by multiplying a category-specific coefficient by the entered total. WorldCalculate exposes both the coefficient and the score so the result can be checked rather than presented as an unexplained ranking.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Wilks category — 2 choices
- Body weight — kg; minimum 20; maximum 400
- Powerlifting total — kg; minimum 0.01; maximum 2000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Wilks category | men |
| Body weight | 69.3 |
| Powerlifting total | 500 |
At 69.3 kg and a 500 kg total, the historical men’s coefficient is about 0.755206 and the Wilks score is about 377.603.
Assumptions and limits
- Body weight and total are entered in kilograms.
- The selected men’s or women’s polynomial is the historical Wilks convention stored by this page.
- The total represents the squat, bench press, and deadlift total under the user’s chosen meet convention.
- No equipment, age, weight-cut, federation, or attempt-validity rules are inferred.
- The formula is used for comparison and education, not as a current universal competition standard.
- The International Powerlifting Federation and other federations may use newer or different formulas.
