Formula and methodology
Formula: Overall wheel width ≈ advertised width + 1 in; centerline = overall width/2; offset in = backspacing − centerline; offset mm = offset in × 25.4; outboard spacing = overall width − backspacing.
Wheel width is normally advertised between bead seats, while a physical backspacing measurement reaches the inner flange. The one-inch flange allowance is therefore shown in the formula instead of silently mixing the two measurements. Positive offset places the mounting face toward the wheel’s outer side; negative offset places it toward the inner side.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Advertised wheel width — in; minimum 0.1; maximum 100
- Measured backspacing — in; minimum 0.01; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Advertised wheel width | 8 |
| Measured backspacing | 4.75 |
An 8-inch advertised wheel is estimated at 9 inches overall; 4.75 inches of backspacing gives about +6.35 mm offset and 4.25 inches of outboard spacing.
Assumptions and limits
- Advertised width is measured between bead seats and uses inches.
- Backspacing is measured from the mounting face to the inside wheel edge using the same inch scale.
- The one-inch total flange allowance is a conventional estimate and can vary with wheel construction.
- Offset is reported relative to the wheel centerline, not relative to a vehicle hub or fender.
- Tire bulge, brake clearance, hub bore, suspension clearance, scrub radius, and load rating are not calculated.
- A mathematically correct offset does not prove a wheel fits a particular vehicle.
- Check manufacturer specifications, vehicle clearance, fastener requirements, and professional fitment guidance before driving.
