Formula and methodology
Formula: Tᵥ = T atan[0.151977√(RH+8.313659)] + atan(T+RH) − atan(RH−1.676331) + 0.00391838 RH^(3/2) atan(0.023101RH) − 4.686035.
Wet-bulb temperature combines air temperature and humidity into the temperature reached by evaporation under a defined approximation. The Stull equation is convenient for quick estimates and gives a useful humidity-aware result without pretending to replace a pressure-aware psychrometric calculation.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Air temperature — °C; minimum -20; maximum 50
- Relative humidity — %; minimum 5; maximum 99
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Air temperature | 30 |
| Relative humidity | 60 |
At 30°C and 60% relative humidity, the Stull approximation gives a wet-bulb temperature of about 24.0°C.
Assumptions and limits
- The Stull approximation is used over approximately −20°C to 50°C and 5% to 99% relative humidity, with weaker behavior in some cold, dry combinations.
- The published fit assumes standard sea-level pressure and the input temperature is in Celsius.
- This is not a heat-stress diagnosis, occupational limit, or substitute for a full psychrometric or wet-bulb-globe-temperature measurement.
