Formula and methodology
Formula: v = fλ; period T = 1/f; angular frequency ω = 2πf.
For a steady traveling wave, one wavelength advances during one period, so wave speed is frequency multiplied by wavelength. The calculator also returns the period and angular frequency used in phase-based wave equations.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Wavelength — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Frequency — Hz; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Wavelength | 2 |
| Frequency | 5 |
A 2 m wavelength at 5 Hz travels at 10 m/s, has a 0.2 s period, and angular frequency 31.416 rad/s.
Assumptions and limits
- Wavelength and frequency describe the same mode in a medium where the chosen wave speed is well-defined.
- Frequency is ordinary cycles per second and angular frequency is reported in radians per second.
- Dispersion, refraction, group velocity, medium changes, and bandwidth are not modeled.
