Formula and methodology
Formula: Gross wall area = total wall length × wall height; opening area = door count × door width × door height + window count × window width × window height; usable wall area = gross wall area − opening area.
Measure the wall line once, then describe repeated openings with their count and typical size. The page reports the gross surface, the area removed by openings, and the remaining surface so a visitor can use the result as a transparent starting point for a material estimate.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Total wall length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Wall height — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Number of doors — minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Typical door width — same length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Typical door height — same length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Number of windows — minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Typical window width — same length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Typical window height — same length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Total wall length | 40 |
| Wall height | 2.7 |
| Number of doors | 2 |
| Typical door width | 0.9 |
| Typical door height | 2.1 |
| Number of windows | 3 |
| Typical window width | 1.2 |
| Typical window height | 1.2 |
Gross area = 108 square units; openings = 8.1 square units; usable wall area = 99.9 square units.
Assumptions and limits
- All dimensions use one consistent length unit, so the area is expressed in that unit squared.
- Repeated doors and windows are represented by one typical size for each group; unusual openings should be measured separately and added as another group.
- The wall line is treated as a flat rectangle with one common height.
- Corners, alcoves, sloped ceilings, baseboards, trim, and wall damage are not inferred.
- The result is surface area only; paint coverage, panel size, seams, cuts, and waste require a separate product allowance.
- If openings are larger than the gross wall area, check the measurements and grouping rather than accepting a negative material area.
