Formula and methodology
Formula: Gross panel-zone area = wall length×panel height; net area = gross−openings; panels = ceiling(net area×(1+waste/100) ÷ (panel width×panel height)); top rail = wall length.
The page treats each panel as a rectangle and reports the top rail separately because rail length follows the wall line rather than panel area. Real wainscoting layouts use stiles, rails, corners, returns, outlets, doors, and product dimensions that can change the takeoff.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Wall length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Panel height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Opening area within panel zone — m²; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Usable panel width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Cutting allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Wall length | 8 |
| Panel height | 1.1 |
| Opening area within panel zone | 1.2 |
| Usable panel width | 0.6 |
| Cutting allowance | 10 |
Net panel-zone area is 7.6 m²; order area is 8.36 m²; at 0.66 m² per panel, order 13 panels and 8 m of top rail.
Assumptions and limits
- The panel zone is a straight rectangle with one entered height and the opening area is entirely within that zone.
- Each panel supplies the entered usable width and full panel height; the allowance covers cuts and layout loss.
- Stile and rail systems, corners, returns, caps, baseboards, outlets, doors, seams, substrate, and manufacturer installation details are not modeled.
