Formula and methodology
Formula: Von Mises stress = sqrt(((sigma1−sigma2)²+(sigma2−sigma3)²+(sigma3−sigma1)²)/2); utilization = stress/yield strength.
The von Mises equivalent stress measures the deviatoric part of a principal-stress state and is commonly compared with a ductile material's yield strength. It is a criterion result, not a full failure or fatigue assessment.
