Formula and methodology
Formula: Voltage regulation = (Vₙₗ − V𝒻𝓁)/V𝒻𝓁 × 100; voltage drop = Vₙₗ − V𝒻𝓁.
Voltage regulation describes how much a supply or transformer output changes between a nearly unloaded condition and a stated full-load condition. The denominator used here is the full-load voltage, a common transformer-textbook convention; the page also reports retained voltage as a percentage of no-load voltage.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- No-load voltage — V; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Full-load voltage — V; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| No-load voltage | 12 |
| Full-load voltage | 10.8 |
Voltage regulation = 11.111%, with a 1.2 V drop and 90% of the no-load voltage retained.
Assumptions and limits
- Both voltages are measured at the same nominal input and use the same polarity and units.
- The displayed percentage uses full-load voltage as the denominator; other industries may publish a different convention, so the definition must accompany the number.
- Frequency, power factor, winding temperature, transient response, and load profile are not inferred.
