Formula and methodology
Formula: Equal-tempered span in semitones = 12 log₂(high frequency ÷ low frequency); octave span = semitones ÷ 12; frequency ratio = high ÷ low; nearest MIDI note = round(69 + 12 log₂(frequency ÷ reference A4)).
The page treats a measured or entered frequency range as the visitor's vocal range and expresses it in musical intervals. It uses twelve-tone equal temperament and a visitor-supplied A4 reference so the note labels are explicit rather than silently fixed to one tuning convention. It does not assess vocal health, range quality, pitch accuracy, register, timbre, or singing technique.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Assumptions and limits
- Both boundary frequencies are positive and the high frequency is not below the low frequency.
- The frequency values are measured or supplied in hertz and describe the same pitch reference and measurement method.
- The interval calculation uses twelve equal logarithmic semitones per octave; note labels are rounded to the nearest MIDI note.
- A4 is assigned MIDI note 69 at the entered reference frequency, commonly 440 Hz but not required to be 440.
- The geometric midpoint is a frequency midpoint, not an arithmetic average of the two frequencies or a claim about a person's comfortable center.
- The result is an acoustic interval description and not medical, pedagogical, audition, or vocal-performance advice.
