Formula and methodology
Formula: Estimated VO₂ max = 483 ÷ 1.5-mile time in minutes + 3.5.
This tool implements the Cooper Institute’s 1.5-mile field-test equation and also shows the implied pace and speed. Field-test estimates can be affected by pacing, terrain, weather, surface, and measurement error; they are not interchangeable with a laboratory cardiopulmonary test.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Time to cover 1.5 miles — min; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Time to cover 1.5 miles | 12 |
A 12-minute 1.5-mile time gives an estimated VO₂ max of 43.75 mL/kg/min.
Assumptions and limits
- The time is the elapsed time for the full 1.5-mile distance, not a split or a pace per mile.
- The equation is used as a field estimate for an apparently healthy, regularly active person as described by the source.
- People who are inactive, have obesity, joint problems, symptoms, or medical concerns should get appropriate professional advice before strenuous testing.
