Formula and methodology
Formula: Virtual temperature Tv = T(1 + 0.61r), with T in kelvin and r in kg/kg.
Virtual temperature is the temperature dry air would need to have at the same pressure and density as moist air. This approximation converts the entered mixing ratio to kg/kg and reports the temperature correction that matters in buoyancy and atmospheric-density calculations.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Air temperature — °C; minimum -273.149; maximum 100000
- Water-vapor mixing ratio — g/kg; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Air temperature | 20 |
| Water-vapor mixing ratio | 10 |
At 20°C and 10 g/kg mixing ratio, virtual temperature is about 21.7882°C, a correction of about 1.7882 K.
Assumptions and limits
- The mixing ratio is water-vapor mass divided by dry-air mass and is entered in grams per kilogram.
- The approximation Tv = T(1 + 0.61r) is used with absolute temperature in kelvin.
- Pressure, condensate loading, nonideal-gas effects, and a full humidity or density retrieval are not modeled.
