Formula and methodology
Formula: Panel run = fence length − gate count × gate width; panels = ceiling((panel run ÷ usable panel length) × (1 + allowance/100)); posts = panels + end/corner posts + gate count; post caps = posts; ordered panel length = panels × panel length.
Preassembled vinyl systems are laid out by panel and post dimensions rather than by individual picket width. The worksheet subtracts gate openings, rounds to whole panels, and keeps the end, corner, and gate-post assumptions visible.

Assumptions and limits
- Panel length is the usable length specified by the selected product, not a nominal marketing dimension.
- Gate openings are measured between the support arrangement used by the chosen system.
- The end and corner post field is explicit because a straight run, a corner, and a gate do not use identical posts.
- One extra planning post is added for each gate opening beyond the continuous panel count.
- The allowance is a panel-count buffer and does not replace checking cuts, slopes, corners, or product instructions.
- Post caps are counted one per planning post; some systems include caps or use different gate hardware.
- The result is a material worksheet and not an approval for wind, soil, structural, property, or code conditions.
