Formula and methodology
Formula: Encryption Cᵢ=(Pᵢ+Kᵢ) mod 26; decryption Pᵢ=(Cᵢ−Kᵢ) mod 26, with the key advancing over letters only.
The Vigenère method applies a Caesar shift chosen by each successive key letter. This page keeps nonletters in their original positions and makes the key-repetition rule visible, so the result is suitable for learning and checking a classical cipher rather than modern security.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Message — ASCII letters are transformed; spaces and punctuation are preserved.
- Key — Use ASCII letters A-Z only.
- Operation — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Message | ATTACK AT DAWN |
| Key | LEMON |
| Operation | encrypt |
LXFOPV EF RNHR; 13 letters are transformed.
Assumptions and limits
- Only ASCII letters A-Z and a-z participate in the alphabet arithmetic; other characters pass through unchanged.
- The key repeats over transformed letters and is case-insensitive.
- The classical cipher is not secure modern encryption and should not protect private or valuable information.
- The message and key are bounded for browser use and are not stored by the calculation handler.
