Formula and methodology
Formula: HV = 1.8544P/d², where P is load in kgf and d=(d₁+d₂)/2 in millimetres.
The Vickers method uses a square-based pyramidal diamond indenter. The hardness number increases with applied load and decreases with the square of the mean indentation diagonal. This calculator averages the two measured diagonals, returns HV in kgf/mm², and converts the numerical pressure equivalent to gigapascals.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Test load — kgf; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Indentation diagonal 1 — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Indentation diagonal 2 — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Test load | 10 |
| Indentation diagonal 1 | 0.5 |
| Indentation diagonal 2 | 0.52 |
Mean diagonal = 0.51 mm and Vickers hardness ≈ 71.30 HV.
Assumptions and limits
- The two diagonals are measured in the same impression and the load is expressed in kilogram-force as required by the stated formula.
- The indentation is suitable for the Vickers method and the ideal indenter constant 1.8544 is used.
- The result is a calculation from measurements, not a materials acceptance decision; surface preparation, dwell time, calibration, anisotropy, and test standard requirements are not checked.
