Formula and methodology
Formula: Vertical exaggeration = horizontal scale denominator ÷ vertical scale denominator.
A profile is vertically exaggerated when one displayed unit represents less real-world distance vertically than horizontally. Dividing the horizontal scale denominator by the vertical scale denominator gives the factor by which relief is visually enlarged.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Horizontal scale denominator — distance per map unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Vertical scale denominator — distance per profile unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Horizontal scale denominator | 1000 |
| Vertical scale denominator | 100 |
A horizontal scale of 1:1000 and vertical scale of 1:100 produce 10× vertical exaggeration.
Assumptions and limits
- Both scale denominators use the same real-world distance unit and the same displayed measurement unit.
- A result of 1 means equal horizontal and vertical scales; a result above 1 enlarges vertical relief.
- The factor describes display geometry only and does not change terrain elevations, slopes, or underlying model data.
