Formula and methodology
Formula: Nominal positions = ceiling(row length ÷ spacing); adjusted seeds = ceiling(nominal positions ÷ (germination fraction × establishment fraction)); seed mass = adjusted seeds ÷ seeds per gram.
The calculator keeps the planned spacing count separate from the seed count needed after two explicit percentages. Germination and establishment are not guessed from the crop name, so the visitor can enter the values from a seed packet, trial, or planning assumption. The output is a row-level estimate and does not include a second row, thinning pattern, or local crop recommendation.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Total row length — m; minimum 0.001; maximum 1000000
- Seed spacing — cm; minimum 0.001; maximum 100000
- Expected germination — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Expected establishment — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Seeds per gram — seeds/g; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Total row length | 12 |
| Seed spacing | 5 |
| Expected germination | 90 |
| Expected establishment | 85 |
| Seeds per gram | 250 |
240 positions fit in 12 m; after 90% germination and 85% establishment, plan for 314 seeds, or about 1.256 g at 250 seeds per gram.
Assumptions and limits
- The row is treated as a one-dimensional line and the entered spacing is center-to-center in centimeters.
- Germination and establishment percentages are independent planning factors expressed as percentages of the nominal positions.
- The resulting seed mass is only as meaningful as the entered seeds-per-gram value and does not account for packet purity, storage, thinning, or crop-specific recommendations.
