Formula and methodology
Formula: Over water: eₛ = 6.1121(1.0007+3.46×10⁻⁶p)exp[17.502T/(240.97+T)]; over ice: eₛ = 6.1115(1.0003+4.18×10⁻⁶p)exp[22.452T/(272.55+T)].
Saturation vapor pressure is the equilibrium vapor pressure above a water or ice surface at the selected temperature. The liquid-water and ice equations have different coefficients, so the phase choice is explicit rather than silently extrapolated.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Surface phase — 2 choices
- Temperature — °C; minimum -50; maximum 50
- Ambient pressure — mbar; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 2000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Surface phase | water |
| Temperature | 25 |
| Ambient pressure | 1013.25 |
Saturation vapor pressure ≈ 31.80 mbar = 3.180 kPa.
Assumptions and limits
- Temperature is in degrees Celsius and ambient pressure is in millibars.
- The liquid-water formulation is used from −20 to 50 °C and the ice formulation from −50 to 0 °C; values outside those phase ranges are rejected.
- Pure-surface saturation is assumed; salinity, curvature, dissolved solutes, airflow, and supersaturation are not modeled.
