Formula and methodology
Formula: Upload seconds = file size in megabits ÷ advertised megabits per second ÷ efficiency fraction.
The ideal transfer time is data divided by rate. Real uploads also spend time on protocol overhead, contention, acknowledgements, and rate variation, so the efficiency input makes that planning assumption visible instead of presenting a headline speed as a guarantee.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- File size — MB; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Upload speed — Mbps; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Effective transfer efficiency — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| File size | 1000 |
| Upload speed | 50 |
| Effective transfer efficiency | 85 |
A 1,000 MB file at 50 Mbps and 85% effective efficiency takes about 188.24 seconds, or 3.14 minutes.
Assumptions and limits
- MB is decimal megabytes and Mbps is decimal megabits per second; the file size is multiplied by eight to convert bytes to bits.
- The connection rate is treated as a stable average and the efficiency fraction accounts for protocol and network losses.
- Latency, retries, throttling, Wi-Fi variation, server limits, and concurrent traffic can make an actual transfer longer.
