Formula and methodology
Formula: relative uncertainty = absolute uncertainty/measured value; percent = 100 × relative; interval = measured value ± absolute uncertainty.
Absolute uncertainty keeps the original unit, while relative and percentage uncertainty make the size of the uncertainty comparable across measurements.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Measured value — units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Absolute uncertainty ± — units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Measured value | 50 |
| Absolute uncertainty ± | 2 |
Relative uncertainty: 0.04; percentage: 4%; interval: 48 to 52 units.
Assumptions and limits
- The measured value is positive and the supplied absolute uncertainty is a nonnegative symmetric half-width.
- The ± value represents an uncertainty statement, not automatically a confidence interval or a known error distribution.
- Instrument calibration, systematic bias, and uncertainty propagation from other inputs are outside this one-measurement model.
