Formula and methodology
Formula: For the unsaturated weak-field estimate, rate per molecule = ½σ₂I²; σ₂ = cross section in GM × 10⁻⁵⁰ cm⁴·s/photon; total events/s = rate per molecule × molecules.
Classical two-photon absorption depends quadratically on photon flux. This tool isolates that scaling and makes the cross-section unit conversion visible; it is not a laser-design or exposure-safety calculator.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Two-photon cross section — GM; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+15
- Photon flux — photons/(cm²·s); minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+40
- Absorbing molecules — molecules; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+40
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Two-photon cross section | 100 |
| Photon flux | 1.0E+24 |
| Absorbing molecules | 1000000000000 |
Rate ≈ 0.5 absorption events per molecule per second and ≈ 5 × 10¹¹ events/s total.
Assumptions and limits
- The cross section is supplied in Göppert–Mayer units and photon flux is in photons per square centimetre per second.
- The sample is in the weak, unsaturated regime and each absorption event is treated independently.
- Pulse shape, focusing, excited-state depletion, fluorescence quantum yield, photobleaching, and sample damage are not modeled.
