Formula and methodology
Formula: Diagonal=2×distance×tan(target angle/2); width=diagonal×w/√(w²+h²); height=diagonal×h/√(w²+h²).
Instead of presenting one brand or room rule as universal, the calculator makes the target angular size explicit. A visitor can compare scenarios using the same geometry for 16:9, 21:9, or another aspect ratio, then choose a real display and seating arrangement separately.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Viewing distance — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Target diagonal viewing angle — degrees; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 120
- Aspect-ratio width — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Aspect-ratio height — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Viewing distance | 2.5 |
| Target diagonal viewing angle | 30 |
| Aspect-ratio width | 16 |
| Aspect-ratio height | 9 |
The geometric estimate is a 1.340 m diagonal (about 52.76 in), 1.171 m wide, and 0.659 m high.
Assumptions and limits
- Distance and calculated dimensions use metres; the inch result is a direct unit conversion.
- The target angle is an entered planning preference for the screen diagonal, not a medical, ergonomic, broadcast, or purchase recommendation.
- The screen is treated as a flat rectangle with the entered aspect ratio and no bezel or curvature allowance.
- Room lighting, eyesight, resolution, content, field of view, manufacturer guidance, and local furniture constraints are not inferred.
