Formula and methodology
Formula: Screen width = diagonal × aspect-width ÷ √(aspect-width² + aspect-height²); screen height uses aspect-height. Center height = eye height + center offset; bottom = center − height/2; top = center + height/2; center viewing angle = arctan((center − eye height) ÷ viewing distance).
The page turns a diagonal screen measurement into the two side lengths implied by an entered aspect ratio, then places the screen around a chosen center height. A zero center offset means the center is level with the viewer's eye height. The viewing angle is a geometry check only; it does not choose a comfortable viewing position or approve a mounting system.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Screen diagonal — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Aspect-ratio width — ratio units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Aspect-ratio height — ratio units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Viewer eye height from floor — length units; minimum -1000000; maximum 1000000
- Screen-center offset from eye level — length units; minimum -1000000; maximum 1000000
- Viewing distance — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Screen diagonal | 55 |
| Aspect-ratio width | 16 |
| Aspect-ratio height | 9 |
| Viewer eye height from floor | 43 |
| Screen-center offset from eye level | 0 |
| Viewing distance | 100 |
A 55-diagonal 16:9 screen is about 47.94 wide and 26.97 high; centered at eye height, its bottom is about 29.51 and its top 56.49 length units.
Assumptions and limits
- Diagonal, eye height, offset, distance, and screen dimensions use one compatible length unit; the aspect ratio is dimensionless.
- The screen is a flat rectangle with no bezel, curvature, tilt, stand, or frame thickness included.
- The viewer eye height represents the selected seated or standing position and is not an average for every viewer.
- The center offset is measured vertically from the eye-height reference; positive values place the screen center higher.
- Viewing angle is the small planar angle from the eye-height horizontal line to the screen center, not a full ergonomic or optical field-of-view assessment.
- Wall structure, anchors, cable routing, viewing obstructions, local building practice, and manufacturer limits require separate review.
