Formula and methodology
Formula: Shell length in inches = shell length in the selected unit; required water volume = shell length in inches × gallons per inch × turtle count; minimum depth = shell length × depth multiplier; litres = US gallons × 3.785411784.
Aquatic turtle care guidance often expresses a starting water-volume rule per inch of shell length, but species, adult size, swimming space, filtration, basking area, and local welfare guidance matter. This planner makes the factor editable and reports water volume and depth separately rather than declaring one tank size universally correct.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Shell length — selected unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Shell-length unit — 2 choices
- Number of turtles — minimum 1; maximum 1000
- Water gallons per inch of shell — US gal/in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Minimum water-depth multiplier — × shell length; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Available water volume — US gal; minimum 0; maximum 100000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Shell length | 5 |
| Shell-length unit | in |
| Number of turtles | 1 |
| Water gallons per inch of shell | 10 |
| Minimum water-depth multiplier | 1.5 |
| Available water volume | 50 |
A 5-inch turtle under a 10-gallon-per-inch scenario needs 50 US gallons (about 189.27 L) and a 7.5-inch minimum depth; the entered volume has zero shortfall.
Assumptions and limits
- Shell length is measured consistently from the front to the rear of the carapace using the convention chosen by the care source.
- The gallons-per-inch value is an editable scenario factor and is not a guarantee of suitability for every species.
- The water-volume estimate scales linearly with the number of turtles and does not model waste load or filtration capacity.
- Depth is a planning minimum only; tank length, swimming width, basking access, heat, UVB, and escape prevention remain separate requirements.
- US gallons are converted to litres using 3.785411784 litres per US gallon.
- Confirm the adult size and species-specific enclosure requirements with an exotic-animal professional before purchase.
