Formula and methodology
Formula: Stretch ratio λ=L1/L0; true strain εtrue=ln(λ); engineering strain εeng=(L1−L0)/L0=λ−1.
True strain accumulates the changing length ratio through a logarithm, while engineering strain compares the total change with the original length. This page reports both conventions from the same two entered lengths so a visitor can see why a 10% extension is 0.1 engineering strain but ln(1.1) true strain.
