Formula and methodology
Formula: TAS = EAS × √(ρ₀/ρ), where ρ₀ is reference sea-level density and ρ is actual density.
Equivalent airspeed is the speed at standard sea-level density that produces the same dynamic pressure. Correcting it for the actual density gives true airspeed, so the same equivalent speed corresponds to a higher true speed in thinner air.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Equivalent airspeed — kn; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Actual air density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Reference sea-level density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Equivalent airspeed | 120 |
| Actual air density | 1 |
| Reference sea-level density | 1.225 |
120 kt equivalent airspeed at 1.000 kg/m³ corresponds to about 132.82 kt true airspeed.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered speed is equivalent airspeed, not raw indicated airspeed; instrument, position, and compressibility corrections have already been handled.
- Air density values are positive and use the same units, so only their ratio affects the result.
- This is a steady subsonic density correction and does not model Mach effects, wind over ground, climb, descent, or navigation guidance.
