Formula and methodology
Formula: Linear scale factor k = target corresponding length ÷ source corresponding length; target perimeter = kP; target area = k²A.
Similar triangles preserve shape while changing size. One pair of corresponding lengths determines the linear factor; lengths scale by k, but area scales by k squared because two dimensions change together.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Source corresponding length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Target corresponding length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Source perimeter — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Source area — square units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Source corresponding length | 8 |
| Target corresponding length | 12 |
| Source perimeter | 24 |
| Source area | 30 |
Scale factor =1.5; target perimeter =36; target area =67.5 square units; area change =125%.
Assumptions and limits
- The source and target triangles are similar with the stated lengths corresponding.
- All length inputs use one consistent unit and source area uses its square.
- The scale factor is positive, so orientation is not reversed in this model.
- Perimeter is treated as a linear measurement and area as a two-dimensional measurement.
- The tool does not determine whether two real triangles are actually similar.
- The result ignores thickness, distortion, material stretch, and measurement uncertainty.
- A scale factor below one represents a reduction and above one represents an enlargement.
- Keep units and correspondence labels attached when applying the projected values.
