Formula and methodology
Formula: Estimated height = horizontal distance × [tan(top angle) − tan(base angle)] + observer eye height.
A tangent-height measurement converts two sight angles and a horizontal baseline into the vertical span between the base and top sight lines, then adds the observer's eye height. The base angle can be negative when the base is below the observer's horizontal line.
