Formula and methodology
Formula: Diameter = circumference ÷ π; radius = diameter ÷ 2. The same diameter is also reported in metres, centimetres, and inches.
Foresters commonly describe a stem by diameter at breast height (DBH), but a normal measuring tape records circumference. Dividing the circumference by π gives the equivalent circular diameter. Measure at the convention required by the survey and record irregular trunks, buttresses, slopes, and measurement height separately.

A 100 cm circumference corresponds to a diameter of about 31.831 cm, a radius of about 15.915 cm, and 0.31831 m.
Assumptions and limits
- The trunk cross-section is approximated as circular at the measurement point.
- The circumference is measured perpendicular to the stem and is not twisted or sloped.
- The tool converts units but does not decide where breast height is for a local forestry standard.
- Irregular, flared, multi-stemmed, leaning, or buttressed trees can need a forestry-specific measurement method.
- The result is a geometric equivalent diameter and does not estimate age, timber volume, health, or value.
