Formula and methodology
Formula: Approximate age = diameter × growth factor; lower planning estimate = age × (1 − uncertainty%); upper planning estimate = age × (1 + uncertainty%).
The growth-factor method is a rough educational estimate: diameter at a stated measurement height is multiplied by a species- and site-dependent factor. The factor and uncertainty are explicit inputs because growth changes with species, climate, soil, competition, damage, and management. Ring counting or a qualified arborist may be needed for a defensible age assessment.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Tree diameter at measurement height — in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Growth factor — years per inch; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Planning uncertainty band — %; minimum 0; maximum 95
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Tree diameter at measurement height | 12 |
| Growth factor | 4.5 |
| Planning uncertainty band | 20 |
The point estimate is 54 years, with a transparent planning band from 43.2 to 64.8 years.
Assumptions and limits
- Diameter is entered in inches and already represents the measurement convention used to select the growth factor.
- The growth factor is supplied by the visitor for the species and site rather than guessed by the tool.
- The relationship is treated as linear for this planning estimate.
- The uncertainty band is a user-selected communication range, not a statistical confidence interval.
- The tool does not count rings, diagnose tree health, estimate carbon, or determine ownership or legal status.
- A tree's actual age can differ substantially when the growth factor is not locally calibrated.
