Formula and methodology
Formula: S_load = P/PF; S_input = S_load/η; I₁ = S_input/V₁; I₂ = S_load/V₂; V₁/V₂ = N₁/N₂.
Transformer selection begins with apparent power rather than real watts alone when the load has a power factor. This calculator keeps load VA, efficiency, currents, and the ideal voltage-to-turns relationship separate so a planning estimate is not mistaken for a complete transformer design.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Load real power — W; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Load power factor — PF; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1
- Transformer efficiency — %; minimum 0.0001; maximum 100
- Primary voltage — V; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000000
- Secondary voltage — V; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000000
- Primary turns — turns; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Load real power | 1000 |
| Load power factor | 0.8 |
| Transformer efficiency | 95 |
| Primary voltage | 230 |
| Secondary voltage | 24 |
| Primary turns | 1000 |
A 1,000 W load at PF 0.8 is 1,250 VA; at 95% efficiency the estimated input is 1,315.789 VA, with about 5.7208 A primary current and 52.0833 A secondary current.
Assumptions and limits
- The load power factor is positive and no more than one; its sign or leading/lagging nature is not modeled.
- Efficiency is entered as a percentage and applied to apparent-power planning arithmetic.
- The turns relationship is ideal and assumes the entered primary and secondary voltages are compatible RMS AC values.
- Inrush, regulation, harmonics, temperature rise, insulation, short-circuit duty, conductor sizing, and electrical-code requirements are excluded.
