Formula: TNT mass equivalent = energy/(4.184×10⁹ J per metric ton TNT).
TNT equivalent is an energy comparison convention. Dividing joules by 4.184 gigajoules per metric ton gives metric tons of TNT equivalent, with kilogram and kiloton displays for scale. It does not predict the pressure or damage pattern of a real explosion, because coupling, geometry, confinement, timing, and environment determine effects.
