Formula and methodology
Formula: Minutes = end clock minutes - start clock minutes + (next day ? 1440 : 0); hours = minutes / 60.
The explicit day selector distinguishes a zero-length interval from 24 hours when the clock times match. Next day always means the following calendar day, including intervals longer than 24 hours when its end time is later on the clock. Decimal hours and total minutes describe the same duration.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Start time (HH:MM) — 24-hour format from 00:00 through 23:59, with two digits for hours and minutes.
- End time (HH:MM) — Use 00:00 for midnight; 24:00 is not accepted.
- End time occurs — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Start time (HH:MM) | 22:30 |
| End time (HH:MM) | 01:15 |
| End time occurs | next |
2.75 hours
Assumptions and limits
- Inputs use exact 24-hour HH:MM notation without seconds or AM/PM.
- A same-day end time may not precede the start time.
- Each clock day is treated as 24 hours. This is wall-clock arithmetic, not elapsed time across time zones, daylight-saving changes, or leap seconds.
